Ta’allum Schools Launch the ‘Accelerated Reader’

Ta’allum Schools Launch the ‘Accelerated Reader’

This week sees the exciting launch of the ‘Accelerated Reader’ in Ta’allum Secondary schools.

It is being introduced in 2020-2021, initially for all Year 7 and 8 students, to raise the profile and foster a love of reading.  At its heart, ‘Accelerated Reader’ is simple. A student reads a book, takes an online quiz, and gets immediate feedback. Students respond to regular feedback and are motivated to make progress with their reading skills. There are special advantages in implementing Accelerated Reader during the period of blended and online learning. The use of the ‘MyON’ Digital library in Accelerated Reader gives instant access to a wide range of appropriate titles with a filter to ensure all books are culturally appropriate for our context in Qatar.

Ta’allum Director of Education, Dr. Mohammed Saefan, said ‘‘We are fully committed to helping our students improve their literacy skills. 2020-2021 is designated as the ‘Year of Literacy’ in Ta’allum Academies. Reading and comprehension are central to all learning in Ta’allum Academies. Accelerated Reader will make the difference.’

An extensive body of research confirms the effectiveness of Accelerated Reader and the best classroom practices in helping teachers dramatically improve students’ reading skills. The research consistently demonstrates that Accelerated Reader enables teachers to target instruction and accelerate reading growth for students of all ability levels. It will give staff in Ta’allum Academies, the information they need to monitor students’ reading practice, and make informed decisions to guide their future learning.

Parents will receive clear information about their child’s reading levels and progress to enlist their support, involvement and to celebrate successes. The new Literacy Lead teachers in each of the schools, Kashif Hussein at AMAB, Kirsty Mae Henderson at AMAG and Aneesa Iqbal will play a prominent role in the implementation. Students are motivated by the feedback and the range of rewards, including the chance to become a Word Millionaire!
